How does the new eVisa scheme work? Do I need to digitalise my immigration status? What do I do if I don’t have a BRP?
If these questions sound familiar, then look no further as Truth Legal is here to answer the uncertainties surrounding the new push to digitalise the immigration system. In this blog, we will discuss the switch to the new eVisa scheme, specifically focusing on how individuals who do not currently have a biometric residence permit (BRP) can make the digital transition.
Why do I need an eVisa?
The UK border and immigration system is becoming digitalised, replacing physical documents with an electronic record, namely an ‘eVisa’. The UK border and immigration system will be completely digital in 2025.
The new eVisa scheme allows individuals with a valid BRP to create a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account. Then with this UKVI account, you will be able to access the new eVisa as proof of your immigration status at any given time.
If you have a valid BRP, you should create a UKVI account here.
What do I do if I don’t have a BRP?
If you do not have a BRP, you must first make a ‘no time limit’ (NTL) application. This application will ensure you are issued with a valid BRP.
You should make an NTL application if any of the following circumstances are applicable:
- You have no official documentary evidence of your immigration status. This is likely if you settled in the UK before 1 January 1973.
- You were issued a passport endorsement or wet ink stamp in your passport before August 2006.
- You have a vignette sticker in your passport.
- Your immigration status is held in an expired or lost passport.
An NTL application will facilitate your switch to the eVisa scheme as you will be issued with a BRP following a successful application, you may then access your eVisa by creating a UKVI account.
‘No Time Limit’ Applications
As noted, an NTL application is a crucial step to take to keep up with the digital transition of the UK immigration system. If your NTL application is successful, you will be issued with a valid BRP. This BRP is essential in completing the switch to the eVisa scheme because you need a BRP to make a UKVI account. It’s mandatory to obtain a BRP before 31 December 2024, as all BRPs expire on this date. To prove your immigration status after 31 December 2024 you will need to show your eVisa.
You should apply for an NTL application here, the application is completely free.
Once you apply for an NTL application you will also be required to attend a biometrics appointment, through the provider UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services (UKVCAS). At the biometrics appointment, staff will take your fingerprints and a photo.
It’s important to note, that this process does not apply to individuals who have a British passport or a certificate of entitlement of right of abode.
After a Successful NTL Application: The Next Steps to an eVisa
If your NTL application is successful, you will be issued with a BRP. You should then create a UKVI account here, which will grant you access to your eVisa.
To clarify, next steps after obtaining a BRP are:
- Create a UKVI account- you will need access to an email address and smartphone to create a UKVI account.
- Provide your BRP number.
- Confirm your identity using the UK Immigration ID check app.
- View your eVisa.
When you create a UKVI account you will be asked to confirm your identity using the UK Immigration ID Check app, this will link your eVisa to your UKVI account.
