Louis MacWilliam

Louis began his immigration law career in Yorkshire in 2008 before moving to London in 2011 to join Asylum Aid, where he ran free legal advice centres for destitute asylum seekers. He later trained and qualified as a solicitor with Bindmans LLP, working within its immigration department.

Louis also holds a master’s degree in Human Rights Law from the University of Leeds, graduating with distinction, a foundation that continues to shape his approach to his work.

He joined Truth Legal in December 2019, establishing and leading the firm’s Immigration Department. Today, he is a Director and co-owner of Truth Legal and serves as Head of Immigration.

Louis advises both individuals and businesses on a wide range of immigration matters. His work includes spouse and partner visas, work-based visas, British citizenship applications and challenges to Home Office decisions. He also specialises in business immigration, supporting employers with sponsor licence applications, sponsoring overseas workers and maintaining compliance with immigration regulations.

Known for his ability to explain complex immigration rules in plain English, Louis has lectured in immigration law at the University of Law and regularly delivers training to international students at the Universities of Leeds, York and Bradford. He is also an active member of the Immigration Law Practitioners’ Association (ILPA).

One area of work Louis is particularly proud of is defending businesses and individuals facing sponsor licence revocation by the Home Office. In recent years, he has successfully represented numerous clients, including care providers, through pre-action correspondence and judicial review challenges, helping them protect their organisations and the people who rely on them.

Outside of work, Louis lives in Headingley with his family. He enjoys tennis, pickleball, cycling and yoga, and is rarely far from his guitar. He is also a dedicated Scotland rugby supporter and looks forward to the Six Nations every year, despite his own rugby career ending well before it ever got started.
